Job Summary

The UCSF Dyslexia Center/ALBA Language Neurobiology Laboratory is recruiting a data administrator to join the Multitudes research team. This is a contracted position and will end on 6/1/2027.

Multitudes is a State of California-funded initiative that bridges neuroscience and education to identify reading difficulties, including dyslexia, in early childhood and support timely intervention. The project has developed English and Spanish screening instruments and is expanding into mathematics, additional languages, and other domains related to brain health. 

The Data Administrator will work with the Multitudes production and research databases from the Multitudes project at Dyslexia Center, which involves large data collection with the Multitudes Platform, RedCap data, and other data sources. The Database Administrator learns to use professional concepts and best practices in maintaining research databases. Working on problems of limited scope, normally receives detailed instruction on work assignments and primarily works with other members in the incumbent's unit. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

Required Qualifications

Job Summary

The UCSF Dyslexia Center/ALBA Language Neurobiology Laboratory is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join the Multitudes research team. 

Multitudes is a research-based early literacy screening platform developed for California public schools and currently available in English and Spanish. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to research and development across Multitudes, with a primary focus on expanding the project to Mandarin and Cantonese. The fellow will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, educators, clinicians, assessment specialists, and school and community partners. Their primary responsibilities will support the Mandarin and Cantonese project, with a focus on research examining Mandarin/Cantonese language and literacy development and the relationship to early reading skills and assessment.

Research focus

• Conduct research on Mandarin and Cantonese language and literacy development in young children, including multilingual and biliteracy development.
• Contribute expertise in Mandarin/Cantonese language and literacy development to develop, evaluate, and refine Multitudes measures.
• Examine relationships among Mandarin/Cantonese language and literacy skills, English language and reading development, and children's language and instructional experiences.

Job Summary

The ALBA Language Neurobiology Laboratory at UCSF is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to investigate the neural bases of language and cognition in neurodegenerative disease.

The selected candidate will participate in projects that focus on establishing MRI protocols with cutting-edge methodologies and applying advanced neuroimaging techniques to a wide range of neurological diseases and conditions. The candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in a translational research project and work closely with the current members of the team, and contribute to our empirical efforts to further our understanding of the neurobiology of language.

Research focus

• Integrate structural and functional MRI, behavioral testing, and genetics to understand language decline.

• Apply advanced neuroimaging methods (diffusion tractography, functional connectivity, graph theory, machine learning).

• Work on large patient cohorts with frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, leveraging the UCSF Memory and Aging Center’s unique resources.

Lab Description

The ALBA Language Neurobiology laboratory is located in the UCSF Memory and Aging Center. The laboratory aims to provide world-class clinical care while performing cutting-edge research on the cognitive and neural correlates of language and related cognitive functions across the life span. Our multidisciplinary team correlates behavioral research with multimodal neuroimaging techniques to understand the neural underpinning of higher cognitive functions such as speech, language, mathematics and memory. Neurodegenerative as well as neurodevelopmental disorders including frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, dyslexia and dyscalculia are used as clinical models.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in a related science area such as neurology, radiology, neuroscience, cognitive science,  biomedical engineering or a related discipline.
• Previous work experience with MRI data collection and analysis.
• Familiarity with existing neuroimaging tools such as SPM, Freesurfer, AFNI, FSL
• Familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language such as Python,  Matlab, R and C/C++.

Job Summary
In the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, the ALBA Language Neurobiology laboratory is directed by Dr. Maria Luisa Gorno Tempini and the Tee Lab is led by Dr. Boon Lead Tee. The ALBA lab study how language is organized into brain networks across the lifespan. ALBA group research how language skills and brain regions are impacted by neurological conditions and how they reorganize in response. The Tee Lab focuses on scientific research that encourage equal representation from diverse populations worldwide in cognitive and dementia research, which would greatly enhance our neuroscientific understanding to brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. The Tee Lab aims to address current calls for culturally and linguistically appropriate cognitive assessment tests, stimulate the development of novel tests for syndromic differentiation in different languages, and enhance our understanding to various neural mechanism by promoting language diversity in cognitive research. The Tee lab has collaboration with scientists and researchers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, India and Turkey, aiming to delineate the neural mechanism of bilingualism and dementia syndromes through cross-linguistic perspectives, promote language diversity in cognitive research and offer equitable care for speakers of different languages. This position will be a joint position between the ALBA and Tee lab.

Under the supervision of Principal Investigators (PIs), the incumbent will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical studies of participants with language difficulties enrolled within the UCSF Memory and Aging Center and may receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

May be responsible for the coordination of one or more single or multi-site, active or follow-up trials; help prepare protocols for study initiation; help design flow sheets, data forms and source documents; may apply understanding of inclusion/exclusion eligibility criteria for protocols; help recruit, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; record protocol specific treatments and assure collection and shipment of samples; assist research personnel to keep patients on study schedules; complete study forms to submit to sponsors and/or appropriate agencies; collect, enter and clean data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assist with data analysis; assist with preparation of reports and tables; attend team meetings; and perform other duties as assigned.

Department Description
The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a clinical research unit within the UCSF Department of Neurology that investigates the clinical (neurological, cognitive, behavioral, neuroanatomic) characteristics of various neurodegenerative diseases. The Primary Investigator’s (PI) research within the MAC focuses on the decision-making processes in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Title: Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC).
Project Title: Frontotemporal Dementia Program Project Grant

​​​Under the supervision of a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) or Principal Investigator (PI), the Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of the Frontotemporal dementia Program Project Grant; coordinate the data collection and operations of concurrent clinical research studies under the guidelines of research protocols, UCSF and regulating agency policies; administer consent forms and standardized test protocols under supervision by a CRC or PI. Any questions that arise during these clinical research visits that go beyond standardized protocol will be escalated to a CRC, Technical Project Manager, or PI.

Frontotemporal Dementia: Genes, Images and Emotions:  The purpose of this program project grant is to help understand the clinical, genetic, imaging, emotional and diagnostic features of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The study collects longitudinal clinical, imaging, behavioral and autopsy data to be analyzed with the goal of improving diagnosis and clinical care for patients with FTD. This project coordinates with multiple sub-projects at the Memory and Aging Center.

Department Description
The UCSF Memory and Aging Center is an NIA-designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) working to translate research science into improved diagnosis and care for people with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases, as well as to find a treatment or prevention. The Clinical Research Coordinator will be working on the Frontotemporal Dementia: Genes, Images, and Emotions study led by Drs. Maria Luisa Gorno Tempini, Bill Seeley, and Howie Rosen. The purpose of this study is to help understand the clinical, genetic, imaging, emotional and diagnostic features of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The study collects longitudinal clinical, imaging, behavioral and autopsy data to be analyzed with the goal of improving clinical care for patients with FTD.
